As a lead up to the launch of Need 4 Speed Heat, North Kingdom helped Electronic Arts to create a campaign app where fans could download a car-drop each week, then customizing the cars by adjusting materials, configure all available parts, create wraps with stickers, create shareable content in a photo studio and view cars in AR. Then when the game launched the saved cars could be loaded into the game. As a bonus, EA automated the process of making custom launch trailers with the users cars and published them on youtube to be shared.
The biggest challenge was to make a clone of the car configurator in the game, but without access to the actual game and limited contact with the game studio. Swappable car parts, a stickers editor, save/load to EA-account. The customized cars would then be available in the real game when you bought the game! We reproduced 75 materials and shaders by looking at video screen captures of the node tree in Frostbite. 118 cars. 14.925 fbx files, 26.813 json-files, 3.333 textures. On mobile! It was of course a massive team effort with many people involved. It was a huge success in the end, but a rough ride getting there. A project against all odds. Just the way I like it and the most memorable projects in hindsight.
